The Differences Between Basic, Standard and Enhanced DBS Checks

There are 3 types of criminal record checks available, each one with a different level of extensiveness that might be better suited to specific situations and job roles. When working with children or vulnerable people for example, it’s often important for an employer to do a background check when it comes to hiring new staff.

DBS checks are generally considered to be the most comprehensive and efficient when used correctly, so it can be important to understand the differences between them before moving forward.

Basic Disclosures

Also known as the Basic DBS check, this searches the applicant’s background for any unspent criminal convictions. While not the most in-depth option, it is often the cheapest and most accessible, since it’s generally as readily available to individuals as businesses. This makes them a popular choice among those who are self-employed and need a check to show a clear criminal history in order to perform their work.

Standard DBS checks

The standard dbs checks are more thorough than basic ones, often searching through an applicant’s record to find more than just convictions. If the role in question is more comprehensive and needs more than a basic look, having information of any cautions, warnings and reprimands can all be useful to ensure that an individual is suitable for the job.

Unlike basic disclosures, an individual cannot apply for a standard check themselves. An employer or organisation will instead need to take the application form provided by the individual and send it themselves, and then they will receive the details of the check (usually via email).

Enhanced DBS checks

For certain jobs where a background check is more serious (for those working in schools, hospitals, care homes, etc.), it’s generally best to opt for an Enhanced DBS check. Like the standard one, there will be details of any warnings, cautions, reprimands and/or convictions the person may have had, plus any information that the local police deem necessary.

This additional information can be crucial in education and healthcare establishments, and can help employers to determine whether or not an individual is legally compatible with their chosen position.

As with standard checks, there isn’t an option for individuals to apply for enhanced DBS checks themselves; the business or employer they’re working for, or are applying to work for, will need to run these instead.
